The seventh graders of McKinney Middle School did a project on the misconceptions and issues of the Islamic religion. Our group decided to do ours on education in Islamic countries.

Education in Islamic countries has been an issue for a long time. A lot of people think Muslim education doesn't matter and that they cannot do great things. But, the truth is that their education is valuable and without their minds our world would not be the same. The Qur'ran (Holy Book of Islam) puts education in a positive light and says education is vital and neccesary.

Poster on Education

(scroll up) Our misconception is that Muslim education isn’t valuable. Our poster is of a boy holding a book, that says “My education is valuable!” There are quotes from the Qur’an about the importance of education surrounding him. (from left to right) "Proclaim, in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher!" "He to whom wisdom is granted receiveth indeed a benef it of overflowing." "He who taught the use of the pen taught man that which he knew not." All of these put education in a positive light. We hope this will prove the importance of their education.

Modern Day Islamic Education

In some Islamic countries, women are not allowed to recieve an education. This is not due to the fact that the religion of Islam doesn't allow women to recieve an education, this is due to the country and government they are in.

Contrary to popular belief, many Muslim women are actually able to recieve an education and find work. Some Muslim-majority countries encourage women to work towards a tertiary education. 29% of immigrant Muslims have college degrees compared to the U.S. population with 25%.

Here are some things we have thanks to the minds of Muslims.

Muslim Innovations

Hospitals - The first medical center was the Ahmad ibn Tulun Hospital founded in Cairo.

Numerical Numbering - Al-Khwarizmi and Al-Kindi were Muslim mathematicians that began the system of numbering around 825.

Algebra - Al-Khwarizmi is also known as the developer of our modern algebra.

Surgery - Many modern surgical instruments are exactly the same as the first ones created by Al-Zahrawi.

Astronomy - A large observatory was built near Tehran, Iran where many things were studied and discovered. Omar Khayyam calculated the exact amount of days in the year.

Hopefully you have concluded that Muslim education is extremely valuable. They will only continue to be of importance to our world. Due to ignorance, many people have misconceptions of Muslim education, but we hope this has enlightened you on the topic.
